Thanks for this. I have to admit, I have lost count of the number of fraudsters/scammers writing to me, connecting via email or my website, with AI generated slop designed to flatter. 

The big hints for me always are, as you say, people writing such as ‘Robert’ – in my case robert.vane01@gmail.com – where they use gmail instead of a domain name. That’s a big red flag.

Second, the length of their bloody emails. My largest was 1,500 words. More common is between 800-1,000. Either way, no genuine festival or book club will write that kind of length. Or use AI.

Third, money. I have never been asked for money to ‘allow’ a book club or literary festival to talk about my books. Yes, I regularly get emails from ‘marketing experts’ etc who seem to expect cash-strapped authors to give them money, but these are as genuine as the straight fraudsters.
